At its core, media converters are simple devices used to connect two devices or LANs that are not entirely relatable, due to different speeds, operation types, modes or media types (twisted pair, fibre, coax). Most common usage is to insert fibre segments into copper networks. This gives you the ability to extend your Ethernet network beyond the 100-meter limit imposed by copper cable. Media converters can be used anywhere in the network to integrate newer technology with existing equipment to support new applications, technologies and future growth. Instead of costly, across-the-board upgrades, media converters can extend the productive life of the existing cabling as well as the active equipment.
Media Converters Benefits
Extend LAN Distances by Using Fibre
Copper-based Ethernet connections are limited to a data transmission distance of only 100 meters when using UTP cable. By using an Ethernet to fibre conversion, fibre optic cabling can now be used to extend this link over a greater distance of up to 80 km.
Maintain Investments in Existing Equipment
Migrate a local network to fibre while protecting your investment in existing copper-based hardware and maintaining the existing infrastructure.
Protect Data from Interference
Electromagnetic interference or EMI can cause corruption of data over copper-based Ethernet links. Data transmitted over fibre optic cable however is completely immune to this type of noise, ensuring optimal data transmission.
Speeds Conversion
Convert link speeds from 10Mbps to 100Mbps or from 100Mbps to 1000Mbps.
Reliable Data Transmission
Considering the fact that a media converter is essentially two transceivers passing data back and forth to each other, it gives you stronger access and a smaller chance of losing any connection.
Media Converters Features
SEAMLESS CONVERSION OF COPPER TO FIBRE
Connect 10/100/1000/10G Ethernet to fibre segments without using crossover cables.
AUTOSENSING PORTS
Allows media converters to automatically recognise the current local network's speed and adjust its own setting accordingly.
SFP PORTS
Enables you to use a Small Form-factor Pluggable transceiver (SFP), either multimode or single-mode, to link the media converter to many kinds of fibre cable.
AUTO MDI/MDI-X
Enables the device port to automatically detect the cable type (straight-through or cross-wired).
STANDALONE OR CHASSIS-BASED
Standalone media converters are deployed to convert one copper connection to fibre, whereas chassis-based media converters can be installed in a variety of configurations for enterprise-wide deployment.
802.3AF POE / 802.3AT POE+ SUPPORT
Power compatible PoE or PoE+ devices like access points, cameras and similar devices in areas without nearby power outlets via copper wiring.
Media Converters Portfolio
Black Box offers the largest selection of commercial and industrial media converters. Use our PRODUCT SELECTOR TOOL to help you find the right media converter for your application.
10-Gigabit / Gigabit Ethernet Media Converters
Provide an economical path to extend the distance of an existing 10-Gigabit or 1-Gigabit link.
Designed to operate in extreme temperatures from -40 to +75°C, these converters have IP-rated cases, and for maximum redundancy, many offer multiple power options.
Extend LAN reach beyond the 100-meter limit of copper CATx cabling by converting links to fibre. Fibre links enable link distances of up to 80 km.
POE simplifies installation of IP security cameras by eliminating the need for a power circuit near the installed device. POE media converters power these devices and backhaul signals to remote data centres or operations centres.
POE media converters backhaul WiFi data and power access points.
With an existing data rate in the LAN backbone at 100Mbps or Gigabit speeds, fibre can accommodate high-bandwidth applications such as streaming media and voice over IP for more secure desktop connections.
Convert fibre links from multimode to single-mode, and vice versa.
